Read the guide

This is the text version of the Things Nobody Tells You About Ames illustration, so you can read it anywhere.

The real stuff. The weird stuff. The helpful stuff. Welcome to Ames, it's not just the cornfields.

The honest truths

Campus is bigger than it looks

What looks close on the map is a commitment in real life. Time your walks. Your future self will thank you.

CyRide runs on CyRide time

It's free with your ISU ID, but buses come when they come. Plan for “maybe,” not “on time.” And yes, it stops running. Don't get caught.

Summer is… quiet

Ames in summer feels like a different town, in the best way. Enjoy the empty roads, easy parking, and slower pace.

The wind is a personality trait

Ames isn't just windy, it's aggressively windy. You'll build leg strength you didn't know you needed.

Main Street is where Ames hangs out

Coffee, thrift shops, burgers, bookstores, live music, Main Street has its own energy. Go. Wander. Repeat.

ISU students have their own language

You'll pick it up fast. Don't worry about it, just nod and smile until “Lake La” makes sense.

Game days change everything

Traffic, parking, lines, and loud people (in the best way). Give yourself extra time and ride the CyRide if you can.

You'll find your places (and people)

Ames becomes yours when you find your spots, your coffee shop, your walking path, your people. Give it a little time.

Local wisdom

  • Don't underestimate how long things take. Give yourself more time.
  • We take our coffee seriously. Local coffee > chain coffee. Fight us.
  • We bike (or pretend we will). It's a lifestyle, even if it's just to Main Street.
  • We wave. A lot. Say hi to strangers, you'll fit in.
  • CyRide can't get you everywhere. Your feet (or a friend with a car) can.
  • The best study spots aren't always on campus. Try the library… or a coffee shop.
  • Thrifting in Ames is elite. You'll find things you didn't know you needed.
  • Some nights are for going out. Some nights are for staying in. Both are correct.
  • We complain about the weather. All. Year. Long.
  • We love ISU, even when we rant about it. It's complicated.

Ames by the numbers

  • Population: ~66,000 (including students).
  • Parks: Over 40.
  • CyRide routes: 14.
  • Coffee shops: More than you'll have time to try.

Smart and a little quirky, we like it that way.

See you at the next CyRide stop, coffee shop, or random sidewalk conversation.
