Read the guide

This is the text version of the Iowa State Campus Guide illustration, so you can read it anywhere.

Campanile views, Cyclone pride, coffee-fueled study sessions, and a campus that knows how to do fall right. A smart student guide to what to see, where to eat, what to do, and how to survive campus like you've been here longer than one syllabus week.

What to see

  • Central Campus & the Campanile: The postcard heart of campus and the backdrop for half your photos.
  • Lake LaVerne: Swans, benches, and top-tier “walking to class but cinematic” energy.
  • Memorial Union: Student hangout central: food, meetings, lounging, and the practical miracle of indoor seating.
  • Parks Library: Equal parts academic temple and last-minute survival zone.
  • Reiman Gardens: Flowers, the Butterfly Wing, and a calm break from deadlines.
  • Jack Trice Stadium & Hilton Coliseum: The loudest proof that Iowa State takes game day seriously.

Where to eat

  • The Café Beaudelaire: Campustown favorite for Brazilian fries and Argentine beef empanadas.
  • Great Plains Sauce & Dough Co.: Thick-crust pizza and the classic move: honey on the crust.
  • The Memorial Union Food Court: Reliable campus fuel when you need food now, not after a 20-minute existential debate.
  • Burgie's Coffee & Tea: A classic campus coffee stop for study fuel and cinnamon-roll-adjacent happiness.
  • Hickory Park: Not on campus, but practically part of the college experience. Big barbecue, bigger desserts.

What to do

  • Catch football at Jack Trice or basketball at Hilton.
  • Study, snack, or people-watch at the Memorial Union.
  • Wander Campustown for food, late-night bites, and student energy.
  • Take a campus stroll from Central Campus to Lake LaVerne.
  • Visit Reiman Gardens and the Butterfly Wing.
  • Go to a public show at the ISU Planetarium in Physics Hall.
  • Find a student event, club fair, or random free activity, Iowa State rarely lets a week go by quietly.

Game weekend rule: eat early or expect a wait.

The campus vibe

  • Friendly, ambitious, and a little weather-hardened.
  • Cardinal and gold are not just colors; they are a lifestyle.
  • Hoodies, backpacks, and coffee cups qualify as decor.
  • People will absolutely talk to you about weather, engineering, or the game.
  • The campus feels big at first, then weirdly like home.

Good to know

  • Getting around: Walking covers a lot. CyRide is the move for longer hops, and Iowa State students ride free with student ID.
  • Budget (per day): Budget: $20–$35. Comfortable campus day with coffee, meal, and activity: $35–$60. Game day or dinner out: $60+.
  • Best timing: Fall is peak Iowa State: football, weather, and that look campus gets when everything is too pretty to be fair.
  • Sunset at Parks Library / Lake LaVerne: Worth planning a study break around.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Underestimating wind chill.
  • Assuming you'll just find parking.
  • Thinking Campustown is the entire experience.
  • Skipping the free stuff, student events, public shows, and random activities are everywhere.

Iowa State rewards the curious, the caffeinated, and anyone willing to walk a little farther for a better campus view. Come for the classes, stay for the Campanile, the coffee, the game-day noise, and the strange speed at which this place starts feeling like home.
