Read the guide

This is the text version of the The Ames Guide illustration, so you can read it anywhere.

Cyclone country, coffee runs, and a city that is way more than just a college town. A student guide to where to wander, what to eat, and how not to end up on the wrong side of the tracks.

Where to wander

Central Campus & the Campanile

The postcard heart of Iowa State. Lawns, trees, and one of the campus icons you'll end up photographing even if you pretend you're too busy.

Lake LaVerne

A classic campus stroll with swans, benches, and peak “main character walking to class” energy.

Reiman Gardens

17 acres of gardens plus the Butterfly Wing. Surprisingly great when you need a quiet reset or a better Instagram background.

Main Street Ames

Local shops, cafés, murals, and the part of town that proves Ames has a life beyond homework.

Ada Hayden Heritage Park

Trails, water views, and excellent “touch grass” territory when campus feels crowded.

Jack Trice Stadium & Hilton Coliseum

Even if you're not a sports fanatic, game-day energy here is impossible to ignore.

What to eat

Great Plains Sauce & Dough Co.

Thick-crust pizza downtown. The famous move: save room for the honey on the crust.

Hickory Park

An Ames institution for hickory-smoked barbecue, big portions, and legendary ice cream creations.

Café Beaudelaire

A Campustown favorite for Brazilian fries and Argentine beef empanadas.

Café Diem

Cozy coffee, pastries, and strong “I came to study but ended up people-watching” potential.

What to do

  • Catch a football game at Jack Trice or basketball at Hilton.
  • Wander the Ames Main Street Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings.
  • See butterflies at Reiman Gardens.
  • Go to a public show at the ISU Planetarium in Physics Hall.
  • Hang out in Campustown for food, late-night bites, and student energy.
  • Walk, bike, or sunset-loop Ada Hayden Heritage Park.

Bonus: farmer's market snack now, pretend it's grocery shopping later.

Local vibe

  • Coffee, hoodies, and backpacks are practically a local uniform.
  • Ames is low-key, but not boring. The trick is leaving your dorm.
  • Friendly, smart, and a little weather-hardened.
  • Cardinal and gold everywhere on game weekends.
  • People actually use the bus here, learn CyRide and you'll feel like a local fast.

Quick practical tips

  • Getting around: CyRide is the move. Iowa State students ride free with a current student ID. Routes connect campus, downtown, shopping, and neighborhoods. Moonlight Express is a free late-night Friday/Saturday safe ride.
  • Budget (per day): Budget day: $20–$35. Comfortable day with coffee, meal, and activity: $35–$60. Game day or big dinner: $60+.
  • Best timing: Fall is elite: football, cooler weather, and campus looking its best. Spring is underrated. Winter is real.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Thinking Campustown is the whole city.
  • Underestimating the wind.
  • Forgetting game-day crowds change everything.
  • Parking without reading signs.
  • Skipping Main Street.

Ames rewards the curious, the hungry, and anyone willing to leave campus for an hour. Come for Iowa State, stay for the pizza, the parks, the Main Street detours, and the oddly excellent bus system.
